MGA Hands First-Ever ESG Seals to 14 Operators

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) announced that it has handed its inaugural Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Code Approval Seals to several gambling operators. The seals attest to the chosen operators’ commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable industry practices and align with the MGA’s own ethos.

Seals Were Handed to 14 Operators

The handing of the ESG Code Approval Seals follows the publication of the voluntary ESG Code of Good Practice last year. The Code invited licensed operators to submit their ESG disclosure returns, encouraging the creation of a more sustainable industry.

The Code covers 19 topics split into Environmental, Social and Governance categories. Its goal is to provide a strategic roadmap for online gambling operators that helps them streamline their reporting efforts.

The MGA clarified that a total of 14 gambling companies have been awarded ESG Code Approval Seals as of the time of this writing. It also added that the code supports two levels of reporting:

  • Tier 1 reporting establishes foundational ESG standards
  • Tier 2 reporting highlights a more “aspirational approach”

In addition, the MGA noted that ESG Code Approval Seals are active for a year. Companies will be able to renew their seals or try to advance their reporting every year.

MGA Wants to Highlight the Industry’s Focus on Sustainability

Charles Mizzi, chief executive officer of the MGA, commented on the launch of the first-ever ESG Code Approval Seals. He expressed confidence in the initiative’s potential to cement the gambling sector as a trustworthy and sustainable industry.

By integrating ESG considerations into their operations, gaming companies not only contribute to the wellbeing of society and the environment but also strengthen the trust and confidence that consumers, investors, and regulators have in the industry.

Mizzi added that the launch of the seals attests to the gaming sector’s recognition of the importance of sustainability, in the broader sense of the world.
