There’s a reason why some people completely avoid joking around about politics. While that’s certainly not the case for comedians sometimes not every joke can find its target audience, and this is exactly what happened during a recent rally for Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden in New York.
A Joke That Causes an Avalanche
During the recent rally in support of the former President, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made several jokes about migrants and Puerto Rico, among other topics. “There’s a lot going on, like I don’t know if you guys know this but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. Yeah. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” Hinchcliffe joked.
Sadly, the joke didn’t land well with the audience, judging by their vocal reaction which sounded like a disappointment. Touching upon the topic of migrants, the comedian spoke about Texas, saying that things are “really, really crazy” down there considering that there’s a “wide open border,” adding “where are my proud Latinos at?”
Later on, Hinchcliffe made another joke about migrants, saying that he welcomes them with open arms, making a “go back gesture.” While the comedian’s performance did make people laugh, the Puerto Rico joke certainly caused frustration among some.
It didn’t take long for a response and it came from Nicky Jam, the famous singer who joined Trump in a rally supporting him in Las Vegas back in mid-September. Following the comedian’s joke, Jam released a video statement via Instagram, confirming that he withdraws his support for Trump. Besides waiving his endorsement for the former President, the famous singer said that he steps “aside from any political situation.”
Besides Jam, the joke did not land well with DraftKings too, with the company confirming it is considering ending its collaboration with Hinchcliffe. The leading gaming and betting operator confirmed in a public statement that the comedian’s commentary does not reflect its views.
The reggaeton star explained that he supported Trump because he considered the former President as the “best for the economy in the United States where a lot of Latinos live.” Jam, who is from Puerto Rico, spoke about the country’s economy which brings lots of suffering for some immigrants.
He added that as a businessman, he thought Trump was the best choice for President. However, Jam said that he never thought that a month after he endorsed Trump, a comedian would criticize and “speak poorly” of his country.
The latest controversial joke comes at a time when President Joe Biden reportedly referred to some of Trump’s supporters as “garbage.” Not unexpectedly, this caught Trump’s attention who arrived for a campaign rally in Wisconsin on Thursday in a garbage truck, wearing a high-vis vest. As reported by the Associated Press, although the former president distanced himself from the comedian, he said he didn’t need to apologize to Puerto Ricans.
The recent development comes at a time when official polls predict a close race between Trump and Kamala Harris. In contrast, betting markets suggest an advantage for Trump in the presidential race.
